At Amesbury CE Primary School we encourage children to become confident and competent readers. We actively engage in reading challenges, book fairs and visits to the Library to allow children to explore reading through a range of activities and to help them explore where reading can transport you. Throughout the year, we ensure that the children access a range of genres throughout their English and guided reading sessions and encourage open discussions about books. Recently we have celebrated World Book Day where the children dressed up as their favourite characters and we also had Bedtime Stories for both KS1 and KS2 to dive into a book and drink hot chocolate!
At Amesbury, we use Bug Club as our main reading scheme. This scheme has a range of genres including comics, non-fiction, traditional stories and play scripts. The content of these books uses well known characters and adaptations of traditional texts to engage the children. Each child has access to their own individual login where they can view books online and develop their comprehension skills through quizzes and activities. We have just subsidised Bug Club with Oxford Reading Tree and Tree Tops books to ensure the children are able to access a range of genres and the classics. The children's comprehension (understanding) of the books are checked regularly through quick, fun comprehension quizzes.
